Bears win 1st game against tough Sidwell Friends BB Team

Perhaps the visiting Quakers felt that they needed to be tougher in light of one of their famous parents caught an elbow in the lip during a 1600 PA Avenue playground game, or maybe it was attributable to the differences in height (the home team starters averages 6’4″ while SFS averages 6’2″ ) and weight (190# vs. 181#), but whatever the rational, the visitors fouled the Bears frequently. Fortunately, the home team shot well from the free throw line (24 FTM vs. 17 FTM[all my stats are unofficial; Mr. Jacoby did not give me these numbers]). The wizards of Wisconsin Avenue brought six returning starters and two transfers to Riddleberger Gym. Coach Singleterry ( SFS ’93 and a Rice hoops alum) is coaching two highly regarded players– Jamal Lewis, a 6’0″ senior with offers from GW, BC and Penn  and Josh Hart, a 6’4″ sophomore transfer from Wheaton.

The tip off was controlled by Darion Atkins, Joe McDonald gathered the ball and made a quick pass to a streaking Chris Hudnut for a 2-0 Bear lead. The Quakers responded smartly, using its speed and shooting to try to offset the home height advantage. The other starters were Addison Sarter(who covered Hart) and Tim  Hetterman (who took on Lewis). Setting an early trend, Coach Luther substituted freely getting Deion Wellington in at 6:12 of the 1st Quarter. All in this first period, Isaiah Colclough and Kellen Millercame in to try to stifle the Friends’ guards.

While the Quakers took an early lead, the Bear’s defense was evidenced by the long arms of Darion, Chris and Joe swatting away the shots of SFS. At 4 minutes of the opening stanza, the Quakers had a 6 point lead. The Bear D and a shorter line up changed the lead to the home team, 11-10 at 2:29 remaining. Landon’s #22 drew a foul at the buzzer and sank two FTs to make it Landon 19 SFS17 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

To start the second period, Coach Luther went back to his starting five. Coach Singleterry, who made few substitutions throughout the game, kept his starters on the court. The Bears continued their pattern of blocking shots and drawing charges. The Landon margin remained between +1 to + 6 for this eight minutes. After Landon forced Coach Singleterry to call time out to prevent a 5 second call on an in-bounds play, Mr. Hart dribbled the ball for 30 seconds and then drove to the hoop at the buzzer, Kellen Miller defensed him well, but was called for a foul. SFS #3 missed a FT and made the second to bring the half time score to Landon 33 SFS 29.

At half Joe had 19 points equalling the score of the two Quaker guards, but all of the Bear starters contributed to the home score advantage.

The third quarter was not as good for the Bears. Quakers’ Matt Hillman, 5’9″ Phil McGloin and Hart hit threes to outscore the Bears 17-11 in this eight minutes.  A number of the Quakers  continued their foul ways, thus precursing their problems in the last quarter. The Bears were given the bonus advantage, I believe, in this 3rd quarter. As with the end of the previous period, SFS #3 was fouled and made one of two FTs to set the score at SFS 46 Landon 44, end of Q3.

The Quakers could not add to their advantage and after 2 minutes of the last quarter led 48-44. At 5:17, the score was 50-50 and the home team then asserted itself. Joe made a  steal and took the ball down to score 2. A key rebound by Tim caused a Quaker to strike him on the arm and our #24 hit two FTs (he was 8 of 10 at the FT line from whence he scored all of his points. A Joe-toChris feed took the lead to 58-53 and Darion pushed the lead to +9 by putting a rebound back in at 2:30.

Coach Singleterry brought his trey shooting 5’9″ guard to try some shots outside the arc. McGloin hit two straight to bring the margin to 62-57 with 1:11 left. SFS fouls slowed the Bear offense down and the score to L 67 SFS 63 with 13.8 seconds left. A clutch rebound by Tim followed by his free throw and two FTs by Deion brought the tally to L70-SFS 65 with 11.3 left. SFS threw up three shots with no success within those last seconds.
